Carl trained in double bass performance with Leon Bosch, later moving on to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and Birmingham Conservatoire. 

Carl graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire with his performance diploma and B Mus in 1994, going on to play with Welsh National Opera amongst others.  

For many years, Carl has collaborated with his friend and former teacher, Leon Bosch, to variously reconstruct, edit, arrange, orchestrate and transcribe music which brings the double bass to the forefront of the musical experience.

This is just a direct transcription of the score using that I did a while ago. I couldn't get VSL to play it because of the size of the orchestra and my ageing computer but I think note performer does a reasonable job. I haven't altered any dynamics or tried to interpret this in any way so this is more or less out of the box.

Beethoven Symphony No 5 in C Minor arranged for string sextet

This is my arrangement of Beethovens 5th symphony for String sextet. It is based on a 19th century quintet arrangement for 2 violins, 2 violas and cello by C.F. Ebers and published by Breitkopf and Härtel. The original quintet is good but it feels a bit light in some places so I added a bass part which is more or less the same as the part in the full score with some minor additions and alterations. The other parts have been changed from the quintet in some parts.

Bottesini concerto in B Minor quintet version

This is my arrangement of Bottesinis second concerto arranged from my transcriptions of the manuscript score of the first movement for full orchestra in B Minor and the manuscript of the concertino in C Minor which has a slightly different solo part and is scored for strings alone. I have made an arrangement in A minor which can be played with a solo bass in standard orchestral tuning.
